Create an Edible Landscape!

Create an Edible Landscape! If you let your lawn go brown this past summer or would like to reduce the size of your existing lawn – using some or all of that space to grow food for you, and our native habitat, can be incredibly rewarding! Master Gardener’s will be teaching a 3-week Edible Landscaping class starting on 1/12/16 at the Campbell Community Center. Call 408-866- 2100 for more details.

Cut down your Christmas tree this year!

Cut down your Christmas tree this year. You can get the entire family out for some fresh air and exercise, and support one of the many tree farms in and around the Santa Cruz Mountains – just a short drive away from most of us. Many of them have picnic areas so you can enjoy a homemade brunch in the trees! Support a local school by letting them pick up & recycle your trees after the holidays – most will do so for a small donation.

Reduce Holiday Gas Consumption

According to Use Less Stuff, if each family reduced their holiday gas consumption by just one gallon (approximately 20 miles), we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons!

Decorate with LED lights

Decorate with LED lights. They are 90 percent more energy efficient than standard lights and last longer as well – up to 10,000 hours compared to 5,000 for incandescent bulbs.

Use Creative Inexpensive Wrapping Paper

Instead of buying expensive wrapping paper – give unique and creative presents wrapped in old maps, sheet music, magazine covers, the comic strips or sports pages from your local newspapers – even your children’s art pages… You can also use reusable shopping bags versus gift bags for a gift that “keeps on giving”.

Recycle Paper Towels

If every household in the U.S. purchased just 1 roll of recycled paper towels, we would save over 500K trees per year – look for: PCF (processed-chlorine- free) brands.
